By Normally I'm not a person who likes to use a lot of front-end automation tools when setting up a server; my preference is to dive in and apply a little elbow grease directly to configuration files. Now, I'm not so sure that that this is the most efficient approach after playing around with Apache Toolbox. Direct from the Apache Toolbox Web site: "Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache with SSL, PHP (v4 or v3), MySQL, ZendOptimizer, mod_auth_nds, mod_dynvhost, WebDAV, mod_fastcgi, mod_gzip, mod_layout, mod_throttle, mod_accessref, mod_auth_sys, mod_bandwidth, mod_auth_ldap, mod_roaming, mod_perl, mod_jserv, OpenLDAP, and the latest gd libraries with PNG support. It is fully customizable and menu driven. Everything is compiled from source. It checks for RPMs that might cause problems and uses wget to automatically download the source if it's missing." Apache Toolbox actually comes in two forms: a 16K install script that will install and configure these components if you've already got them on your system, or a 15 meg download that contains all the necessary source code in addition to the install script. There's really nothing especially fancy about the Apache Toolbox. After making sure you're logged in as root, Apache Toolbox runs a script that lets you choose what packages to install (there's an abbreviated form that lists the packages, along with an expanded form that provides expanded information). If it can't find a package, it asks permission to download the latest version. Your final step is to edit your Apache configuration -- which is basically where we began this editor's note. If you've got a heavily customized Apache installation, you may not find that Apache Toolbox saves you any time. But if you're installing a server from scratch and want to make sure that the latest and greatest are installed properly, Apache Toolbox is a great tool.
