PR: ApacheCon 2001 keynotes offer a look into the future of computing and open source software
Mar 23, 2001, 00 :06 UTC (0 Talkback[s]) (404 reads)

The Apache Software Foundation announced the keynote speakers for this spring's ApacheCon 2001, the annual conference and exhibition for Apache-related and open-source software. The next wave of Apache deployed projects will be discussed at the Santa Clara Convention Centre in the heart of Silicon Valley, 4 through 6 April, 2001.

ApacheCon 2001 will provide a look at the future of Apache technologies -- including expert developer insights into the open source community, key technology vendor presentations, senior Apache member talks, and the most widely attended gathering of open-source followers and observers from around the globe.

"Back in the beginning of the Apache project, it was all about collaboration and forward-thinking," said Ken Coar, Apache Software Foundation (ASF) Board Member. "ApacheCon 2001 will take that a step further, and with our guru speakers we'll begin looking at the next generation of Apache software development."

The keynote speakers include:

  • Jon "maddog" Hall, Executive Director of Linux(R) International, a non-profit vendor organization dedicated to promoting the use of Linux will look at "a large company in the Pacific north-west" that says that people wish to keep on using PCs and "a large company in Redwood Shores, California" that says that people wish to store all of their data in large server machines, then use "thin clients". While an argument can be made for either, Hall will make a stronger argument for both.
  • Futurist and Science Fiction Author David Brin will answer the questions of whether the Open Source Movement represents one of the most hopeful signs that a complex civilization may be able to adapt to changing times. His talk will explore a range of possible changes challenges we may face in the near future and touch upon some plausible visions of the territory just beyond.

The conference will also feature presentations from top developers about key Apache-related and many new open source technologies. Attendees can also participate in several informal Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, Apache-related and open-source software exhibits, that are all part of ApacheCon 2001 - making the conference one of the top locales for developers to participate in the open-source revolution. ApacheCon is authorized and developed by the Apache Software Foundation, making it the best opportunity to share ideas with the people behind the effort.

"The growing open-source software movement continues to evolve, and attract more leading-edge companies and the industry's premier developers," said Lars Eilebrecht, ASF Board Member. "It's not just a Web server anymore."
