Servidium Releases Jaydoh Framework to the Masses
Jan 26, 2001, 16 :37 UTC (1 Talkback[s]) (666 reads)

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan 26, 2001 --Servidium Inc, a software company focused on the creation of web and wireless application development tools, has announced that it is granting free access to Jaydoh(tm) for all not-for-profit development applications. Individuals, educational institutions and not-for-profit organizations, excluding government agencies, may download an unregistered version of Jaydoh 2.9.0 for all not-for-profit development initiatives. A free evaluation license for the for-profit entities or government agencies is available for a period of sixty (60) days. Client purchases of a fully registered license receive the added benefits of personalized technical support, and ongoing product maintenance and upgrades.

By offering full versions of Jaydoh for not-for-profit initiatives, "entities that do not generate profits will have access to sophisticated application development tools," states Michael Sikorsky, Senior Technical Architect at Servidium. He adds," This program will also increase the user base and awareness for Jaydoh products as well as drive demand at the corporate level." More so, Servidium will continue to support and build alliances with educational institutions offering technical programs for JavaTM software development.

Jaydoh is a modular development platform, written in 100% Java(tm), which enables the rapid development of web and wireless applications through a collection of reusable and customizable components. Jaydoh uses open standards and is completely platform and datasource independent. This is to say that regardless of the current software used - Oracle(tm), Sybase(tm), MS Access(tm), WebLogic(tm), iPlanet(tm), or similar products - Jaydoh can access the information.

In a unique approach, Jaydoh offers the customer the flexibility and capabilities of advanced technologies, such as Java and XML, while providing components to enable rapid application development. Consequently, the enterprise class components are easily integrated with existing systems or can be used to create new ones. This avoids the recreation of common foundation components such as security routines, form handling routines, and application integration routines. According to Jeff Poste, Chief Technical Architect at Calgary based PreferSoft Inc., "Servidium's Jaydoh helped us to accelerate our development of e-business applications without sacrificing strong design fundamentals. I estimate Jaydoh has decreased our development costs by 30-50 percent".

Based on Object-Oriented design, the product encourages the use of proven pre-built components in the construction of enterprise applications. Developers can then focus on the application's direct requirements rather than on infrastructure through a combination of Java-based components and wizards. Over sixty-five fully functional examples along with a 300+ page Developer's Guide and a fully documented sample application are also provided as a learning tool. This allows programmers more time to focus on the web artistry, data modeling, and business logic thereby maximizing their value.

Application Developers are the primary target users for Jaydoh. Using the framework, they can directly develop their applications from the pre-built components and flexible infrastructure contained in Jaydoh. Jaydoh enables Application Developers to focus on building their application rather than worrying about the detailed complex infrastructure that applications need to operate. It can handle all security, session management, presentation, and database access. Unlike other rapid application development tools, Jaydoh is not an all-or-nothing solution. It was specifically designed to allow application developers to use only selected components. By simply using additional components provided by Jaydoh, developers can choose to add more functionality to their applications later in the development cycle.

Servidium has designed the framework so that it pays attention to the needs of the enterprise application developer. As a result, Jaydoh enables Application Developers to work independently of the Web-Page Designers. In fact, the framework's template and service handling mechanism supports long-lived and easy to maintain applications.

Web-Page Designers are generally responsible for defining the appearance and construction of the pages of an application's user interface. Most web/wireless rapid application development tools require that the roles of Application Designers and Web-Page Designers be merged into one - that is, application code will actually reside in the web-page. However, this often breaks down on all but the most trivial applications. Subsequently, Web-Page Designers are required to understand application code, and conversely Application Developers must understand the pixel level details of the user interface.
Jaydoh's template mechanism directly addresses this problem. Using the template mechanism, Web-Page Designers never see or write application code. This enables the Web-Page Designers to rapidly prototype the look of the application once for all uses rather than having to re-do or throw away any of their design work. Another compelling reason why Web-Page Designers like building Jaydoh applications is that the template mechanism lets them work in any HTML Graphical Editor. Accordingly, Web-Page Designers work as they normally do and don't have to conform and learn new tools and ways to work. The Web-Page Designers do not directly use the framework; the framework directly works with what they create.

With a proven implementation record for clients that range from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, Servidium's Jaydoh offers developers the following advanced, performance-tested features:

Unique Pluggable Security: In web-based application development today, security is often neglected until later stages of development and retrofitting at this late stage is difficult and costly; legacy applications with little or no security are challenging to Integrate securely to the Internet; and finally, application security is often tightly coupled to one vendor's proprietary security framework -- again changing the implementation is difficult and costly. The outcome is a tightly coupled, static, inflexible architecture that does not provide for easy future extensibility or upgrades.

Jaydoh was developed with an extensible and pluggable security architecture from the beginning: Securing your applications could not be easier. The pluggable nature of Jaydoh's security allows you to defer security decisions or change security implementations at anytime in application development at no penalty. Jaydoh really does separate Presentation from Business from Security.

Powerful Presentation Services: Jaydoh's Template Mechanism enables a fast, iterative approach to application development while offering a clean separation between presentation and business logic. Graphics Designers and Developers can work in parallel and integrate seamlessly and continuously. Jaydoh's template mechanism can use any content type that is "text" based, such as HTML, WML, XML/XSLT, VoxML, Java source etc. It also fully supports JSP markup, nested templates and placeholder substitution.

Apart from the template mechanism, Jaydoh also provides a wide variety of presentation components for displaying HTML content including HTML Table, HTML Tree, HTML DateField, and HTML Windows.

Enhanced Database Support: Jaydoh provides developers with a host of tools that make working with databases easier including simplified result sets, connection pooling, key generation, timestamp management and deployment utilities. In addition, Jaydoh's database services are built on a vendor-independent framework, providing portability while shielding the application from differences in database implementations. Jaydoh currently supports eight major database vendors including Oracle(tm), SQL Server(tm), Sybase(tm), PostgreSQL(tm), SQLAnywhere(tm), MS Access(tm), PointBase(tm) and InstantDB(tm).

Advanced Application Integration Services: Jaydoh-Accommodo offers a generic middleware framework for application integration using XML over HTTP. Accommodo eliminates the need for extensive programming. Instead, it transforms applications into components and integrates them. Rather than having custom interfaces between individual programs, Accommodo provides a middleware framework as a connection software hub linking all applications resulting in systems that are easily maintained and expanded. Accommodo is written in 100% Java and supports any Java Servlet capable environment such as: Solaris, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Windows 9.x/NT/2000. Accommodo also integrates with industry-dominant web servers including Apache, Netscape Enterprise Server and Microsoft Internet Information Server.

Solid Development Tools and Utilities: Jaydoh provides numerous useful utilities to assist application developers including base64 encoder, placeholder substitution, thumbnail generation, server-side GIF and JPEG encoders, email utilities, file upload capability, event management, object pooling, working lists, etc. Jaydoh also has several development tools including web based administration, debugging and logging utilities, development wizards, and a tool for generating DreamweaverTM library objects from Java class methods.

For more information on how you can obtain a version of Jaydoh, please visit Servidium at www.servidium.com, or email at . On-line examples, sample applications and documentation are also available.
